“You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.” - Jon Kabat-Zinn
We work at our best when our skill level matches the difficulty of the challenge we face. This state is called flow, and it makes your job easier. Instead of draining your energy you feel like you gain more of it.
If the challenge is high, but your skills in that area are weak, you will most likely experience anxiety. On the other hand, if your skills are high, but the challenge you are tackling is low, you will experience boredom.
Are you feeling bored? Increase the level of difficulty.
Feeling anxious? Decrease the difficulty of your tasks and improve your skills in that area.
Ask yourself: How could you bring more awareness to why, how and what you do today?
Being in flow makes you happy
But flow is not only about getting into that state of intense concentration. It is also a way of finding happiness. When you are in that state you are so focused that nothing else seems to matter. You stop worrying about problems or stressing about the next day. You just feel as one with what you are doing. Time might pass without you even noticing.
Being in flow is not only reserved for your work. You can feel completely in balance when you are climbing a wall, drawing a picture or write a text. Try out what makes you feel in flow today.
Fun Fact: The idea of flow has been around for a long while now. Already the ancient philosophers Marcus Aurelius or Epictetus talked about a similar feeling in their writings.
